[TW: harassment, threats, stalking, violence, slurs, racism]
So, someone decided to post this submission with a link to medievalpoc to a subreddit called “Tumblr In Action” this morning.
I’ve posted about this before.
Let’s stop pretending we have no idea where this comes from:
And can we stop pretending as if these supposed “rules” actually mean anything, or are ever actually enforced:
Medievalpoc has received tens of thousands of hits from this particular subreddit from more than 60 separate threads, some of which have hundreds of derogatory comments, using slurs, threats, and racist ‘jokes’.
And it is somehow a “coincidence” that I have had to speak to police four times and make official reports due to threats, stalking, harassment, and other nastiness? That people have followed me around in person without my knowledge or consent because of this? People have circumvented the “ignore” function by creating accounts just to send racial slurs and threats.
The rest of this is going under a cut, because it is truly horrific. Please proceed with caution.
People ON REDDIT who had become concerned “Tumblr in Action” has gone too far over this MONTHS AGO have been shouted down by people who are perfectly comfortable blaming the victims of harassment for having been harassed:
I’m not “making up” any of the harassment. People create tumblr accounts just to send messages like these:
There is much worse I will not post here.
This has been going on for months:
But, wait, there’s more.
People posting personally identifying information about me (or that they believe is about me) to tumblr and reddit, which I have obviously blocked out/removed:
No, wait, there’s even more:
^^People following me around in person without my knowledge or consent, apparently.
If anyone was wondering why I had to call the police several times, THIS is the kind of thing I am talking about. I have no idea whether these people were taking photos or videos of me, if they intended to harm me physically, or what they intended to do. There have been people posting images they believe are of me, following around people they believe are me, writing some of the most bizarre crap I have ever seen, sending messages to other people telling them to harass me, posting what they believe is my “real name”, my workplace, and anything they think has to do with my personal life.
To reiterate: there were literally people following me around in person to try and “catch me” in…I don’t know, existing?… because I blog about art history and race.
And there are even more people who believe that I deserve this, because I have the unspeakable gall to post about art history.
This is not a “call out”. That is STALKING. This has never been about calling out anything, it’s about trying to terrorize someone until they never speak again:
"She’s running scared now"-not much here makes sense, other than these posts/this behavior is clearly meant to frighten and cause a reaction.
I am a human being, trying to engage people in a genuine discussion about art, history, and media. I’m trying to do it where people can actually SEE it, where they can READ it, where they can learn for themselves and make decisions about what to believe. And I’m not the only one.
It is acceptable to you that this is the price we pay? For speaking? For existing? Because I will tell you, it gets worse than this.
It gets MUCH worse than this.
Really, how bad does it have to get? Are we still acting like this is “just trolls”? Like these aren’t real people? That this is “just the internet?” And who’s fault is it again? According to Tumblr in Action:
Because I posted this submission this morning, am I “asking for it” yet again? I have no plans to stop writing anytime soon, and I will not silence myself. And I refuse to be silent about this anymore.
I plan to mostly run off the queue until the theme for next week, History of POC in Math and Science, begins. I am very much looking forward to it, and this is too much of a positive force in my life to ever allow this kind of garbage to end it for me.
My thanks to you, readers, for making it possible.
